Austin Chapter History

The Austin chapter was organized in September 1929 by women initiated into the campus chapter at the University of Texas at Austin. The charter from the national organization came in 1930. We are more than 75 years old locally! In those early years, the alumni met at two meetings each month for a professional program and information exchange. Today, the Austin chapter is one of the largest and diverse professional communications organizations in the city.

Hundreds of Austin communicators benefit from Women in Communications variety of current issues and professional development programs. The chapter has received many national Outstanding Chapter Awards as well as individual programs awards in recognition for its excellent programs, member service, and membership growth.

At the 2000 Annual Professional Conference that we hosted here in Austin, we were named the Most Outstanding Chapter in the country by the National organization. The chapter boasts five winners of the prestigious national Association for Women in Communications Headliner's award among its members. Since 1989, the chapter has awarded more than $14,5000 in scholarships to area communications students.

At right, local chapter members enjoy themselves at the 2000 AWC National Conference Night Out, which was held at the Oasis on Lake Travis.
